About James

James has had a strong affiliation with horses from a young age, growing up on a working farm surrounded by riding horses and Pointers. He graduated from Exeter University with a degree in Geography, and while mixing his studies with Pointing he started work at Tweenhills Stud under the guidance of David Redvers.

He progressed from Tweenhills to pupil assistant to Sir Mark Prescott in Newmarket and after completing that apprenticeship travelled to Australia to take up employment with trainer Peter Moody when Black Caviar was in her prime. Following an eventful spell in Australia James returned home to the UK to take up a position as Roger Charlton’s assistant at the renowned Beckhampton Stables. This opened many doors including the opportunity to travel to Hong Kong with horses in his care which in turn led to an introduction to Sir Michael Stoute, for whom he worked alongside for 7 years as his Assistant at Freemason Lodge and Beech Hurst Stables in Newmarket before taking up his licence as a trainer in his own right.

With an exceptional CV working for some of ‘Racing’s Greats’ James has made a bright start to his training career operating at 18% winners to runners in his first season; with a Listed winner and Group 3 second in Sam Maximus including notable winners on Ebor Day and St. Leger Day with Phantom Flight and Asjad. James is surrounded by an excellent team who work tirelessly to support him both at home in the yard and on the racetrack together with Maria his partner and Director of the business, dealing with Owners Communications and bloodstock sale management. James also holds a close relationship with several talented jockey’s including Group 1 winning rider PJ McDonald, Epsom Derby winning jockey Richard Kingscote and up and coming jockey Adam Farragher to name a few.
